Disability Insurance for Merchant Mariners

Consider these facts:

Risk of Disability is Substantially Greater Than Risk Of Death

The statistics are higher for mariners because no other occupation except fire fighters requires a higher level of physical fitness and only mariners are subject to the Perils of the Sea. Any doubts on this, take few hours to read Coast Guard NVIC 04-08 - a 75 page booklet which provides guidelines to physicians who are assessing your Fitness for Duty. Here are excerpts:

For purposes of this NVIC, a medical condition is considered to cause significant functional impairment if it impairs the ability of the applicant to fully perform all of the physical abilities listed in this enclosure, or if it otherwise interferes with the ability of the applicant to fully perform the duties and responsibilities of the requested credential.
Service on vessels may be arduous and impose unique physical and medical demands on mariners. The public safety risks associated with the medical and physical conditions of mariners on vessels are important considerations for the safe operation of vessels. In the event of an emergency, immediate response may be limited to the vessel's crew, and outside help may be delayed. Mariners must be medically and physically fit to perform their duties not only on a routine basis but also in an emergency.

What Should a Mariner do? Consider Disability Insurance

Disability insurance helps replace a major portion of your income when you are sick or injured and unable to work. Having disability insurance can provide a sense of security, knowing that if the unexpected should happen, youll still receive a monthly income.
