R.J. Mellusi & Co. is an insurance agency formed in 1979. The company is authorized to market the unique MOPS License Insurance policy. MOPS (Merchant Officers Protective Syndicate) which is underwritten by the Lancer Insurance Company, has continuously defended the licenses of mariners and endorsements of tankerman since 1935. During that time MOPS has assembled the largest collection in the United States of decisions and legal memoranda regarding license suspension revocations proceedings.

Experienced Maritime attorneys which form the MOPS legal network have been involved in many of the major maritime disasters including the Exxon Valdez, the Florida Skyway Bridge, the explosion and sinking of the tanker Golden Dolphin and the QE2 and Glacier Bay groundings.

Ralph J. Mellusi is both an Admiralty & Maritime attorney and licensed engineering officer. Following graduation from Fort Schuyler, the oldest Maritime College in the country, he spent his early maritime years at sea sailing as Third, Second and First Assistant Engineer. Following completion of law school, he entered the practice of Admiralty & Maritime Law and since 1975 has concentrated his practice to the representation of merchant officers in matters involving Marine License Defense, Jones Act occupational injury, labor disputes, and other matters related to the protection and defense of seafarers.

From 1982 to 1989, R.J. Mellusi was also an Adjunct Professor of Admiralty & Maritime Law at the Maritime College at Fort Schuyler.

As a Maritime Attorney, Professor of Maritime Law, Licensed officer, and Marine Insurance agent, R.J. Mellusi is well suited to answer any question and tackle any problem that could befall a mariner. His steady clientele includes hundreds of individuals, pilot associations and deep sea fleet operators.
